Fitness Specialist

Department: Therapy
Location: East Lansing, MI

Full Time Position Available.  Primary hours would be 8:30-4:30pm, but candidate must have the ability to work extended or flexible hours, as necessary which includes some weekend days.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Design and implement one-on-one fitness and group exercise programs as directed in the provision of services to ensure that quality care is being provided to each participant. Perform clerical duties, as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Design and Implement Fitness and Group Exercise Programs.

    • Assess resident’s overall fitness to develop exercise plan.

    • Design and implement individualized exercise programs based on the individual’s goals, medical history and physician’s consent.

    • Assess goals and review exercise programs, as necessary.

    • Schedule residents to achieve maximum efficiency during assigned shift.

    • Communicate effectively to Fitness Technicians and Wellness Manager so they can successfully implement exercise programs with little to no guidance.

    • Assist the Wellness Manager in completing and updating paperwork for clients.

    • Transport and transfer residents as required for services.

    • Design and implement group exercise classes based on the groups’ ability levels.

    • Present and evaluate new fitness/wellness programs to maximize wellness throughout Burcham Hills.

    • Communicate with care staff, managers, therapists, physicians / physician assistants and family members to ensure quality of care.

    • Maintain proper documentation of sessions for billing purposes.

    • Come to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrate dependability and punctuality, comply with attendance policy.

  1. Other Duties:

    • Train and educate fitness technicians and interns on implementing and/or developing individualized and group exercise programs.

    • Attends and participates in continuing educational programs for information and maintaining certification requirements, as needed.

    • Adheres to established confidentiality standards as required by Burcham Hills concerning community and patient information.

 

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Hold a bachelor’s or higher in an Exercise related field, preferred.

  • Personal Training Certification from an accredited program is required if Fitness Specialist does not have the above credentials.

  • At least two years’ experience in fitness programs as a trainer, instructor or equivalent educational/training experience required.

  • At least two-years’ experience instructing the elderly population in fitness programs, preferred.  

 

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to monitor vital signs.

  • Fundamental knowledge of the human body and how exercise impacts special populations.

  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, diagnoses, issues and conditions related to resident functioning and exercise.

  • Proficient using Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.

  • Ability to deal tactfully and communicate with team members, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the public with patience and a cheerful disposition.

  • Willing to perform functions that may involve exposure to blood, body fluids and/or infectious waste.

  • Ability to work extended or flexible hours, as necessary.

  • Willingness to handle difficult situations involving residents.

  • Ability to effectively complete multiple tasks, priorities, deadlines and responsibilities with little or no supervision.

  • Possess analytical thinking, goal and priority setting, problem solving, follow through skills and have a high standard for accuracy and attention to detail.  

  • Ability to demonstrate compassion professional enthusiasm and be able to build relationships with the internal and external customers.

  • Familiarity or experience with issues that impact the lives of elders.
