Recreation Therapist-CTRS

Department: Life Enrichment
Location: East Lansing, MI

Full Time Recreation Therapy position available, offering flexible scheduling and an opportunity to work with a dynamic team of Recreation Therapists. Must be able to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays with notice. Burcham Hills offers CEU and NCTRC fee assistance for Full Time CTRS positions. A. Recreation Therapist Duties

  • Designing and facilitating therapeutic activities for groups and individual clients
  • Promoting a positive therapeutic milieu
  • Actively participating as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating individual care plans, as well as documenting client progress
  • Our program utilizes electronic documentation & incorporates dynamic programs including leisure education, non-pharmacological pain management, adaptive recreation equipment utilization, & sensory stimulation.
  • Facilitate an engaging and effective recreation program to meet the individual needs and interests of the community.
  • Assist with implementing the monthly calendar for assigned neighborhood; includes providing small and large groups and one-to-one programming for residents who cannot participate in a group setting.
  • Assure the programs meet the interests and physical, mental and psychosocial well-being of the residents.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records of the resident’s participation in and response to the activities as specified in department protocol.
  • Implement treatment program based on treatment plan and goals developed. Monitor resident response to recreation. Effectively communicate feedback on behaviors and responses to engagement for modification of care plan or approach to treatment as indicated by resident needs and standards. Adapt recreation to meet the individual needs of the resident.
  • Assist in facilitating special events for the entire community.

Position Specifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Must be graduate of a Therapeutic Recreation program, certified through NCTRC, or eligible to sit for exam.
  • 1 year of relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with geriatrics in a long-term care, assisted living or other related residential health care setting preferred.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must be compassionate and have a love for eldercare, provide outstanding customer service, be an enthusiastic and upbeat professional, and be able to build relationships with the internal and external customers.
  • Foundational knowledge of recreation/leisure and how it effects residents’ quality of life and functioning.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, diagnoses, issues and conditions related to resident functioning.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills with a high standard for accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to function independently and follow moderately complex instructions, once work tasks have been assigned.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, measure and interpret the program goals, objectives, policies and procedures etc., that are necessary for providing quality recreation programs.
  • Proficient using Word Processing Systems, Publisher, Excel & Power Point.
  • Ability to work extended or flexible hours, as necessary.
